Early bird deadline (September 4) for 8th World Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) conference in South Africa from 9–13 November 2015

This is  a guest post by Joël Houdet who holds Senior Research Fellowships at the African Centre for Technology Studies (Nairobi, Kenya) and the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (University of Pretoria, South Africa).

This guest post is the expression of the author’s thoughts and experiences and as such is acknowledged as a fruitful contribution to the discussion on biodiversity offsets. If you want to react or clarify your own position (underpin or disprove), please leave a reply below!

The 8th World ESP conference will be held in South Africa from 9–13 November 2015.

The central theme is ‘Ecosystem Services for Nature, People and Prosperity’. The conference will pay special attention to the public and private sector dialogue on how the ecosystem services concept can be used to support conservation, improve livelihoods and engage the business community.

ESP especially encourages delegates from businesses to attend the ESP conference in order to discuss challenges and opportunities in using the concept of ecosystem services to achieve conservation and sustainable use of our ‘natural capital’ within a market-context. The conference will provide an excellent platform to engage with experts who can generate solutions to these challenges and start making a difference in practice.

The conference will be held in South Africa and is hosted at a very special location: Spier Wine farm and Conference Centre in Stellenbosch. See location section for more information.

NOTE: Early Bird deadline extended

The deadline for Early Bird registration has been extended untill 4 September. Early Bird registration will close at 17:00 CET the 4th.

Happy Birthday, Biodiversity Offsets Blog!

1st birthdayAn incredible first year with the Biodiversity Offsets Blog has passed — time to say THANK YOU for your support and interest! I have met (in person and virtually) so many interesting people and learned about many interesting aspects of biodiversity offsets and impact mitigation from all around the world. Thanks for contributing, sharing and visiting the blog! It’s been a pleasure and an adventure.

I don’t feel like drawing conclusions or looking back at the moment, but rather share some brief observations (or outlook if you like).

  1. Almost silently the blog has welcomed its 10.000th visitor some time during the summer holiday break — awesome, please keep checking this site and recommend to others!
  2. As this blog is also (more or less narrowly) tied to my PhD, I am happy that I have been awarded a six months grant for the completion of my PhD.
  3. With that deadline in mind, I also wonder what comes after that and how to proceed with the Biodiversity Offsets Blog. I am thinking of making the blog a project in itself (being able to extend and put proper time in it) and searching for some funding for this. Do let me know what you think of this and if you have any ideas! (Other alternatives?)
  4. Seen the discrepancy between my limited capacity and the growing information density, I have created a new post format for the blog: the “SHORT INFO”.
  5. I have a long task list for follow-up on emails, comments, LinkedIn messages and connection requests and I sincerely apologize for not being able to respond faster (I need to focus on my paid work in a first instance ;o)) And some time off during this past month even made things worse — but I promise I’ll get back to you asap.

And most of all: I am looking forward to another great year on the Biodiversity Offsets Blog and in real world!

“SHORT INFO” — New post category on the Biodiversity Offsets Blog

short infoThe world of biodiversity offsets is turning faster and faster — at least that’s what it feels like for me: there’s such a lot of information already out there and increasingly new bits are being added to the giant puzzle of knowledge. Now that sounds a bit pathetic, but you get what I mean.

With the capacity that I can dedicate to the blog being limited, I wondered how to face this growing amount of information and decided to create a new post category that is likely to become the most frequent format on the blog: the “SHORT INFO”.

Everything about these posts is meant to be short: smaller picture (if any) and very brief description, without comment or context as for my usual posts. They follow the same structure and provide some basic information on my online finds:

  • What’s it about in short?
  • When was it released?
  • By whom?
  • More info (where’s it accessible?)
  • (and possibly a short extract from the website)

Hopefully, with this new tool I can share an even greater wealth of information with you  as I come across it (and prevent news being buried in my “planned posts” list).

What do you think about this new format? Like it or not? Useful or not the right format? Please tell me what you think and leave a reply! (Oh, and see the first example here!)
