On 23 June, the Euro­pean Par­lia­ment hosted a screen­ing of the doc­u­men­tary Bank­ing Nature, which ques­tions the role that mar­kets play in pro­tect­ing bio­di­ver­sity, fol­lowed by a debate about the role the EU should play in sup­port­ing inno­v­a­tive finan­cial mech­a­nisms for bio­di­ver­sity protection.

At the heart of the dis­cus­sion was accep­tance that nature is in cri­sis. If we con­tinue to lose bio­di­ver­sity at the present speed and scale, the future pro­vi­sion of the most basic of human needs such as food, clean water and clean air could be at risk.
