It has been quite a while since the last newsletter of the Business and Biodiversity Offset Programme. So, I was both happy and surprised when the latest newsletter came in last week. It is full of information from the biodiversity offsets field that have emerged over the past months.
In its BBOP News section the main results from the No Net Loss Conference in June in London (see my previous post here and here) were highlighted and links for the extensive conference documentation provided. This is followed by the announcement of a number of publications and tools:
- Policy Development for Environmental Licensing and Biodiversity Offsets in Latin America
- Comparing biodiversity offset calculation methods with a case study in Uzbekistan
- CBD Guidance on Integrating Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in Standards
- Biodiversity Banking Assessment for Finland
- Extraction and Biodiversity in Limestone Areas
- Importance of Baseline Specification in Evaluating Conservation Interventions and Achieving No Net Loss of Biodiversity
- Biodiversity Offsets: A Primer for Canada
- The Legal Status of Environmental Credit Stacking
- Biodiversity offset markets: current challenges and prospective developments
After some company news, e.g. the announcement of a new workplan of the Cross-Sector Biodiversity Initiative and regarding biodiversity offsets in Madagascar, new policy developments are presented:
- New biodiversity offsets policy in New South Wales, Australia
- Extension of the deadline for the consultation on the EU No Net Loss Initiative until October 17, 2014 (BBOP recommends my previous post on the EU consultation for more background and practical information, that’s pretty cool – thanks!)
- Public consultation on the environmental and social safeguard policies of the World Bank is open until November 30, 2014
- Good Practice Guidance on Biodiversity Offsetting released in New Zealand
- Briefing on the application of the Mitigation Hierarchy in France (sequence ERC)
The newsletter closes with the announcement of job opportunities, conferences and upcoming events:
- CBD COP 12 Business and Biodiversity Forum in Pyeongchang on October 12–14, 2014
- 16th Annual BIOECON Conference: Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Sustainability in Cambridge on September 21–23, 2014
- 15th International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA15) in Florence on April 20–23, 2015
